For our last two Schools Competitions of the year we've decided to cross our fingers for good British summer weather and extend the Competition to fill the afternoon, this time at Whalley Range Cricket Club. This proved to be a popular decision as our Netball Competition Winners Stamford Park returned and were joined by Longsight CP, Armitage C of E, St Margaret's C of E, St Catherine's, Didsbury C of E and Pownall Green.
Teams were split into two groups of 4 across our pitches which meant teams always had a match, and time not playing was only limited to 10-15 mins if one game ran on longer than the other. We had a short briefing with the kids and grown ups, and then we got the ball rolling!
From the first match it looked like we were in for a great afternoon! You could tell there was some real ability and that teams had been practising. Plus the teachers/sports leaders/school staff for each team really had their teams organised when fielding. Setting up in the familiar Kwik Cricket format with a couple of changes, we set the boundary within reach so we could see plenty of 6s and 4s scored.
The groups were shaping up well with the quality of bowling a real highlight, good shape, good straight arm and line and length to match. The weather was perfect with sunny spells and warm all afternoon, which meant we stuck to schedule and finished on time. Semi finals were contested between Longsight CP & St Catherine's, and Stamford Park & St Margaret's C of E with both semis going down to the last over of the match!
In the final another impressive performance with the bat from Stamford Park saw them comfortably win and take another set of medals back to their school.
We were blown away by the enthusiasm and skills that everyone showed, and loved seeing the kids enjoying themselves and getting into each minute of every game. We're already looking forward to heading back down to Whalley Range for our next Schools Competition Rounders, on the 5th of July.
